ON THE 3RD JULY 2014, I FIRST PUT PEN TO PAPER. 3 YEARS ON, AND IT’S TIME TO TELL THE WORLD. IN JUST 5 DAYS' TIME ANCIENT TIDE RELEASES ON AMAZON. IT’S BEEN AN INCREDIBLE JOURNEY. THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT.
Over that time I’ve learned so much. Writing a novel is by far the most challenging task I have ever undertaken, but at the same time it has been the most rewarding. During my journey I have discovered so much.
As I count down eagerly to what I can assure you is a long-awaited release, I’d like to share some of the nuggets I have learned along the way. I’m sure you’ll find them useful in business as well.
Have the courage to realise that what you've produced is not as good as you had hoped. Salvage what you can and start again.
Not everyone will appreciate your work. Get used to it. Learn to sort those that have something constructive to say from those who are just plain rude.
When you really want something, I mean REALLY want something, you will move heaven and earth to make it happen. You know you're driven when you're out of bed and writing at 6am on a Saturday.
Make time for your creativity. Nurture rather than neglect it. If you try to be creative after a long day at the office, you'll find yourself staring at a blank screen for hours.
Find your inspiration where you least expect to. I lost count of the number of plot issues that I resolved while going for a walk. Sometimes just taking yourself out of what you're doing can be exactly what you need.
In the same way that work can, writing a book takes over your life. Make an effort to be present. Remember, nothing is more important than those you love.
Don't look for perfection in your first draft. Get your ideas down on paper and then polish them later. Otherwise you'll find yourself wasting hours on refining what you'll later consider as rubbish.
Explore every piece of feedback. Understand where it comes from. In the cold, clear eyes of a stranger lie the nuggets that just might make what you are doing stand out from the crowd.
My novel, Ancient Tide is the story of a love so strong it refuses to die. It is a tale told over centuries. To find out more, please visit simon-harding.com/ancienttide.
